Density-Independent Factor
Density-Independent Factor- A limiting factor whose effects on a population are constant regardless of population density.
Density-Dependent Factor
Density-Dependent Factor- A factor that limits a population more as population density increases.
Growth Curves
Types of Population Growth
The first type of population growth is exponential growth. This growth occurs when reproduction is at a constant rate with ideal conditions and unlimited resources. It is represented by a J shape.
The second type of population growth follows exponential growth and it is known as logistic growth. It occurs when a population's growth slows or stops as resources become less available.
Carrying Capacity
Carrying capacityis the largest number of individuals of a population that an environment can support. The carrying capacity is reached when just enough resources are available to support the population.
